The Purpose Driven Life – Book Review

Anyone ever heard of “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren?  This was the first book I read as a brand new Christian, aside from the bible, and let me tell you, this book taught me so many basic truths about who God is and what His plan is for me.

“The Purpose Driven Life” just celebrated its 10th anniversary after selling over 32 million copies in 85 languages and becoming the best-selling non fiction hardback in history (according to Publisher’s Weekly).  Thus, a new edition was released for the next generation of Christians.  I was excited to receive a copy to review as this book had been so central to laying down my Christian foundation, and the first thing I noticed was the book’s beautiful and simple updated design.  Other changes to the book include a QR code for each chapter which links you to a video or audio sermon (about 40 minutes) and a shorter video (about 2 minutes each) by Rick Warren as well as other information intended to take you deeper on your 42 day journey.  Speaking of 42 days, the original book was just a 40 day journey (read one chapter each day), but the new edition is updated with two extra chapters on envy and fear of rejection.

This book aims to help you discover your purpose and guide you towards living the life you were meant to live.  It had a huge impact on me as a brand new Christian and I would say this book is good for both those who are new to church, or who have been in the church for a long time but either are new in their personal faith or looking for some clarity or encouragement.  At times, the teachings may seem a  bit simple or too basic for those who are further along in their faith journey, and so if you are looking for a book with a lot of spiritual meat, this might not be it.  But I still definitely loved re-reading this book now that I am 9 years into my journey compared to reading it when I was just a couple of days into my journey.  I think there is truth in this book for everyone, no matter where you are along the path.
