Happy BIRTHDAY Ezra!

Dear Ezra,

Tonight, on the eve of your first birthday, I held you on my chest as you drifted off to sleep. It occurred to me that this was the very first thing you did at the beginning of your first year and the very last thing at the end of your first year. I felt the tears in my eyes as I thought about how this would be the last time that I would hold you and rock you as a true baby, before you were one. I stroked your face and kissed your sweet head, I can’t believe how much I have come to love you in the last year.

On March 7, 2010, I was a very frustrated pregnant woman! You were 8 days late at that point and I skipped church, unable to face everyone still pregnant. I felt like you would never come, each passing day felt like a year! The night of the 7th, your Grandma LaVonne gave me an excellent foot rub and then stroked my hair as I lay with my head on her lap. I ended up falling asleep like that. I woke up and put myself to bed around 11, not knowing that just before 3 AM on March 8, 2010 I would wake up with contractions, rush to the hospital and have delivered you by 5:06 AM. All 10lbs 9oz of you!

As I said, each day I was overdue felt like a year and now here we are, a year later and it has felt like just one day. Time has gone so fast! Let’s recap what happened in this last month. We went out to Pine Lake Christian Camp for the Fire and Ice retreat with the teens. You had me up all night as we slept in the room with all the girls and I didn’t want you to interrupt their little sleep with your crying. When we got home, I trained you to sleep, and now you sleep about 11 hours, from 7PM-6AM. You are doing so great! You had your first Valentine’s Day and decided that you would start crawling on your hands and knees. We all think you look so cute as you clip-clop around the house, wiggling your little bum as you go. At first you were a bit wobbly and unsure but now you are a master crawler! Not long after learning to crawl you also started scaling the furniture, and you are quite skilled at that also. You still don’t stand on your own, and you don’t like walking too much when we hold your hands, so I’m thinking that you won’t be walking any time soon. You got two more teeth this month, bringing you to a grand total of 8 teeth before your first birthday! We took you to your first movie, Gnomeo & Juliet in 3D. You sat so well through it, you were so amazed at the big screen and couldn’t look away. It was the first time that we all went to a movie together. Mom and Dad had never even taken Eva to a movie together, so this was special for us, our little family all lined up in the theatre. We wished we had a pair of 3D glasses for you! You love to play with your little toy cars and even sometimes make car noises. You also love to play with any doors, and you love to shut them but then you get so frustrated when it is shut and you can’t get it open again! You love your big sister, she has a special way of making you laugh so hard. As I said, you have been sleeping well at night and still have two naps a day usually. We started giving you some rice milk every once in a while and you love it very much and are easily excited by the sight of a bottle. You go to Sunday School and you cry as soon as you see your teacher, Ms. Fiona, knowing that I will be leaving you. You usually settle down and are able to stay for the whole class. Lastly, today, I just gave you a whole apple to see what you would do with it and you figured out how to eat it and consumed half of it! You were quite pleased with yourself.

There are so many things that I love about you, sweet Ezra. This has been such a great year. I love you so much and look forward to all of our years together as mother and son.

Love, Mama
