#1 Love. Fruit of the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23a.

I have thought many times about doing a series on the fruit of the Spirit.

So here is my feeble attempt!

#1: Love.

Paul says that if we are living by the Spirit then we will be displaying love in our life. But what is love?

1 Corinthians chapter 13 defines love pretty clearly for us, in a way that I have never seen before:

Love is…
– patient
– kind
– not envious
– not boasting
– not proud
– not rude
– not selfish
– not easily angered
– keeps no records of wrong (forgiving)
– rejoices in the truth

Love always…
– protects
– trusts
– hopes
-perseveres

Love never fails.

I could unpack all of those points, but that would be another series in itself!

So many times in a day I find myself losing patience, making rude remarks, not showing respect, being selfish, being envious, being easily angered (this is a big one!), etc. etc. And how many times have I exploded at my husband over things that happened last week, or a month or a year ago, just because today he did something similar (keeping a record of wrongs).

When I read these points from 1 Corinthians 13, I am reminded that love is more than just a feeling, more than romance, not something you just receive.  You show love by how you act, and that is something I am striving for.

(Make sure to check out flickr for a free download for you to print and stick somewhere that will help to remind you of what love is!)

(PS – Dear Husband, I would like to buy some colour ink for the printer.)
